Investigations Unit
The McCook Police Department assigns trained officers to carry out the duties of an investigator when the need arises. The unit investigates all types of crimes that may occur in the Village of McCook, and the officers receive additional training in many areas to make them well-rounded and knowledgeable investigators.
How a Case ProgressesFrom Report to Resolution
Initial Report
The officer who takes the initial report will do as much as possible at the scene — gathering facts, interviewing witnesses, securing evidence, and documenting everything thoroughly before forwarding the case to the Investigations Unit.
Case Assignment
Once the Investigations Unit receives the report, the case is assigned to a dedicated investigator who will remain with that case from assignment through to its conclusion — ensuring consistency, accountability, and thorough follow-through.
Active Investigation
The assigned investigator pursues all leads, conducts interviews, gathers additional evidence, and coordinates with other agencies as needed. For more complex cases, two or more investigators may collaborate until all leads are exhausted or an offender is apprehended.
Case Closure
Every case is pursued to its fullest extent. The investigator remains assigned until the case is closed — whether through arrest, prosecution, or exhaustion of all available leads. No case is abandoned without full effort.
